Now
What I'm focused on right now. This is a /now page, an indie web convention for sharing what you're currently up to.
🔨 Currently Working On
Building my portfolio and reputation.I'm early in my software engineering career, so my focus is on shipping real work, writing about what I learn, and taking on projects that push my skills.
- This site— Continuously improving owen-devereaux.com with new features, better performance, and more content. It's my learning playground and public resume.
- Consulting work — Taking on freelance projects to build experience and help businesses ship software faster. TypeScript, React, Next.js, and API development.
- Task systems & CLI tools — Building personal productivity tools that help me stay focused and ship consistently. 780+ tasks shipped so far.
📖 Reading
- The Staff Engineer's Path by Tanya Reilly — Understanding technical leadership and the path beyond senior engineer. Great mental models even for someone early in their career.
- Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir — Pure fun. Science problems solved with wit and duct tape. A nice break from technical reading.
🧠 Learning
- System design— Moving beyond "it works" to understanding why certain architectures scale and others don't. Reading case studies, building toy implementations.
- Testing strategies — Getting better at knowing what to test, when to mock, and how to write tests that actually catch bugs instead of just hitting coverage numbers.
- Writing clearly— Technical writing is a skill. I'm practicing by blogging regularly and treating documentation as a first-class deliverable.
